放大器中使用的主動元件也是經過好幾世代的變化，從早期的三極真空管到五極真空管，進步到bi-polar電晶體與JFET，現代則演進到MOS或各類型最新製程的高絕緣高穩定性FET。每種元件所發出來的聲音都大不相同。
事情好像沒這麼單純？有點電學觀念的人都知道，除了控制極外，做為電流通道的陽極和陰極間也必需加上一個電壓差，否則光是形成電流通道，電子是不會流動的，電子一定是由低電壓走向高電壓的。那麼，電流通道的陽極至陰極電壓差是否也會影響電流導通量呢？答案當然是會的，這原理很簡單，就好像高速公路寬度若不變，但是每輛車的時速都變快，總車流量就會增加一樣。所以可以影響電子通道的因素就變成了2個，其一是控制訊號本身的電壓，其二則是電子通道的電壓差。
