路德維希·凡·貝多芬（Ludwig van Beethoven，1770年12月17日受洗於德國波恩，1827年3月26日在奧地利維也納去世），是一位集古典主義大成，開浪漫主義先河的歐洲古典音樂作曲家，他也是一位演奏家和指揮家。他一共創作9首編號交響曲、35首鋼琴奏鳴曲、10部小提琴奏鳴曲、16首弦樂四重奏、1部歌劇、2部彌撒、1部清唱劇與3部康塔塔，另外還有大量室內樂、歌曲與舞曲。這些作品對音樂發展有著深遠影響，因此貝多芬被後人尊稱為樂聖。

童年

貝多芬的雙親，左圖是父親，右圖是母親。貝多芬一家原籍佛蘭德梅赫倫[1]，他名字中的「凡」（van）並非德語中的「von」，並不代表任何貴族封號，而是用來顯示其家鄉。貝多芬的祖父，也同名路德維希·凡·貝多芬，20歲時遷居波恩[2]，在科隆選帝侯宮廷內當一位樂隊長。父親約翰則是一位唱詩班男高音[3]。母親瑪麗亞·馬達琳娜·凱維利希（Maria Magdalena Keverich）是宮廷御廚的女兒。她在出嫁約翰之前曾結過一次婚，併產下一子，但原先的丈夫與兒子皆早逝。她與約翰在1769年8月2日產下一子，名路德維希·瑪麗亞·凡·貝多芬（Ludwig Maria van Beethoven），但六天後就夭折了。

貝多芬的出生地1770年12月17日，這段婚姻中的第二個兒子路德維希·凡·貝多芬以「Ludovicus van Beethoven」之名受洗。日後人們普遍認為這個孩子是在1770年12月16日在波恩的波恩衚衕（Bonngasse）街20號出生的，但是這種說法缺乏證據。路德維希的父母日後還生下了5個子女，但只有第2和第3個活了下去。他們是卡斯帕·安東·卡爾·凡·貝多芬（Kaspar Anton Karl van Beethoven）和尼古拉斯·約翰·凡·貝多芬（Nikolaus Johann van Beethoven）。不幸夭折的三位則是：在1779年受洗的安娜·馬利亞·弗蘭切斯卡（Anna Maria Franziska，只活了四歲）、1781年出生的弗蘭茲·喬治（Franz Georg，2歲時離世）、1786年受洗的馬利亞·馬格麗塔（Maria Margaretha，在周歲之年夭折）[4]。

最初，貝多芬家庭情況還算如意。約翰的經濟狀況不錯，老路德維希在經濟上也能幫助一下這個家庭[5]。約翰有酗酒的習慣，脾氣暴躁，母親則體弱多病，這是日後作為長子的貝多芬必須挑起家庭重擔的重要原因之一。也正是因此，貝多芬愛母親遠勝於父親。貝多芬可能在5歲時患有中耳炎，但並沒有得到很好的治療，這可能為其日後的耳疾埋下禍根。

貝多芬年紀很小就開始接受音樂訓練。他的音樂啟蒙老師正是其父[6]。6歲就能作曲的莫扎特無疑給貝多芬的父親立了一個榜樣。為了使自己的兒子貝多芬也成為一位神童，約翰很早就教貝多芬彈奏鋼琴。這樣的做法雖然使得貝多芬在1778年就能在科隆登臺演出[7]、11歲就在劇院樂隊演出、13歲就成為風琴師，並發表了3首奏鳴曲，但卻顯得拔苗助長。約翰有時甚至會在深夜將貝多芬從床上拉起，要他在朋友面前演示其音樂才能。貝多芬因此在上學時顯得注意力不夠集中。11歲的時候，他就因父親財力不濟被迫輟學。他在學校所學到的應該不會很多。而此時的貝多芬，和其他11歲的孩子是沒有什麼差別的。
