1996年總統直選以來，民進黨在新竹、苗栗等客家地區，得票數向來不理想。據了解，前民進黨主席蔡英文身為客家女兒，為了強化客家基層服務，日前已在新竹關西租下一棟透天民宅，日後將做為客家辦公室或客家會館，加強地方互動。
NOWnews《今日新聞》19日晚間向蔡英文辦公室查證，發言人洪耀福證實此事並表示，目前還在籌劃中，準備完成將會對外說明。
據指出，設立客家辦公室的想法，主要由蔡英文親自拍定案，並由幕僚選定新竹關西一處民宅，以一個月2萬元的租金，租下3層樓，室內總坪數約30至40坪，目前正在裝潢，預定秋天正式開張。
據了解，蔡辦目前尚未討論客家辦公室的定位，但未來將用來舉辦組訓、開會使用，而場地也將對外開放給當地的社團借用，服務從基層著手進行。
