當紅襪跟紅雀隊爭奪10年來第3座冠軍時，已經一百多年沒拿冠軍的小熊隊，正在尋找新任總教練，他們看上前水手隊教頭Eric Wedge。這位45歲教頭，本月稍早離開水手隊，結束3年在西雅圖執教的時光，這段期間戰績213勝273敗。
Wedge的教頭生涯自2003年開始，那年他35歲，帶領印地安人隊，經過4個球季耕耘，終於在2007年開花結果，當年印地安人隊拿下分區冠軍，他也獲得年度最佳總教練肯定。
不過隔年印地安人隊勝率只剩5成，2009年更掉到65勝，季後Wedge去職。經過一年休息，2011年重出江湖，擔任水手隊教頭，不過3個球季勝率都沒過半。總計Wedge總教練10年生涯，戰績774勝846敗，勝率0.478。
印地安人隊的口袋名單，還有A.J. Hinch、Manny Acta、Rick Renteria、以及Dave Martinez。紅襪隊板凳教練Torey Lovullo可能在世界大賽後，跟小熊隊面談。
小熊隊上次奪得世界大賽冠軍，已經遠在1908年，新任教頭無論是誰，都要背負「百年孤寂」的壓力。
