2013年6月中BMW 4-Series正式發表，宣告3-Series以往的雙門Coupe車型走入歷史由4-Series取代，隨後7月初原廠也毫不留情的宣佈最後一輛M3於德國Regensburg廠完裝下線。雖然對於消費者來說沒有太多影響，但對於性能車迷來說四門車型的氣勢就少了一味，往後就要改用M4之名延續銷售旗下最暢銷的後驅性能跑車。
